Fleas are one of the most common parasites that can affect your pets. These tiny insects feed on your pet’s blood, causing itching and discomfort. If your furry friends don't take flea treatment in time, fleas can lead to more severe health problems because fleas carry huge amounts of bacteria.
If your dog or cat has fleas, there will be a few telltale signs that your furry friend is getting bitten. Once you notice one or more of the following clues, your pet likely has a flea problem.
1. If your pet is excessive scratching, licking or biting at their skin
One of the tell-tale signs that your pets have fleas isn't the flea itself, it's your pets excessive scratching, licking or biting certain areas of their body. Flea bites can be very itchy and uncomfortable for dogs, which is why they may try to relieve the itch by scratching, biting or licking at their skin. It could mean your dog or cat is infected with fleas.
2.Take notice of your pets' hair loss
It’s easy to distinguish whether dog or cat fur hair loss. If your pet has fleas, they may experience hair loss in certain areas of their body. Pets have bald patches or thinning hair are usually due to excessive scratching and biting, which can damage their skin and hair follicles.
3.Look for visible fleas, flea dirt and flea eggs on your dogs or cats.
For fleas, please part the hair of your dog or cat and looking for fleas on their skin. Fleas are dark brown and very tiny, but they're still able to be seen with the naked eye and you may be able to see them moving around on your dog’s fur.
Flea dirt is the feces of fleas and it contains digested blood that fleas have taken from your pet. Flea dirt looks like small black specks and can often be found on your pet’s skin or in their fur. You can also place a white towel under your pets and brush their fur to see if any black specks fall onto the towel.
Flea eggs are tiny, white, oval-shaped eggs that shape resemble rice and are about the size of a grain of sand. If you see small white specks in your pet’s fur, it could be a sign that they have flea eggs.
4.Check for flea bites on pets' skin.
Fleas leave small red dots on their victims' skin, the bites are typically smaller than the average insect bite and look like small bumps on your pet's skin. You may notice small bumps or scabs on their skin, especially around their neck, back, and tail. Sometimes, dogs or cats can have a strong reaction to flea bites and may experience intense itching, redness, and inflammation of the skin. That mean your pets have flea allergy dermatitis which is a skin condition. Please take them to the vet as soon as possible.
At the end, if you suspect that your pet has fleas, please recognize these signs in pets carefully. It’s important to act quickly to provide flea treatment once you find flea on pets.
